In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, the term heat pump normally refers to a vapor-compression refrigeration device that includes a reversing value and optimized heat exchangers so that the direction of thermal energy flow may be changed without loss of efficiency. Most commonly, when used in heating, heat pumps draw heat from the air or from the ground.

What Are Your Heat Pump Options?

Most heat pumps are either compression heat pumps or absorption heat pumps. Mechanical energy, powered by electricity, is how a compression heat pump operates. On the other hand, absorption heat pumps can also operate through the use of heat as an energy source, either by burnable fuels or electricity.

Which Heat Pump Is More Energy Efficient?

One of the burnable fuels that can run an absorption heat pump is gas. Either natural gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are great sources of energy for absorption heat pumps. While these pumps may only have an efficiency rating of 1.5 on the Gas Utilization Efficiency scale, they do a little better than natural gas or LPG furnaces, which can only reach a GUE rating of approximately 1. And just in case you're wondering why that's important, the GUE is the ratio of the energy supplied to the device to the energy consumed by the device. The better your rating, the more efficient your device 

Due to efficiency, you may want to go with an electric compression heat pump, as they are more efficient than the absorption pumps. however, if you live in an area where electricity is fairly expensive and natural gas is somewhat inexpensive, then you may want to consider an absorption heat pump. Furthermore, sometimes heat pumps powered by electricity require an electrical service upgrade, and a pump powered by natural gas would help avoid those costs.
