Geo-Thermal technology uses the earth’s renewable energy, just below the surface, to heat or cool a home and to help provide domestic hot water. It’s sometimes referred to as a geothermal heat pump, a ground source heat pump, or earth energy. While the initial cost of these systems is much higher than a standard air conditioning/heating system (typically 10 times the initial cost of a standard system to add to an existing home), they use 40% to 70% less energy than conventional systems. While conventional furnaces and boilers burn a fuel to generate heat, geothermal heat pumps use electricity to simply move heat from the earth into buildings, allowing much higher efficiencies. The most efficient fuel-burning heater can reach efficiencies around 95%, but a geothermal heat pump can move up to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity needed to power the system, resulting in a practical equivalence of over 400% efficiency. They can also pay for themselves like a new higher efficiency AC system can, just over a longer period of time.
