An air handler is basically an electric furnace. They take the air around them, run it through their system, and produce cool or warm air. This is why they can sometimes be referred to as air moving units, or air mixing units. But we will stick to calling them air handling units.
The Basics of Air Handler Units
A residential air handler unit, or AHU, is made up of a blower, a coil, an expansion device, a heater rack and a filter. The heater piece is often sold as an accessory, but ins one models they come factory installed. The AHU can come as a horizontal unit, or a vertical unit.
Air handlers usually connect to a ductwork ventilation system that distributes the conditioned air through the building and returns it to the AHU. Sometimes AHUs discharge (or supply), and admit (or return), air directly to and from the space served without ductwork.
